Jumpstart some healthy eating habits that leave your body and your teeth feeling great with these yummy nutritional snacks!

We’re all guilty of grabbing an Oreo cookie or a bag of chips for a snack. But we know without much research on Google that these snacks do not benefit our bodies, and they’re terrible for our teeth too.

So let’s see how we can trade up! Changing just one or two of our go-to snacks for a healthier alternative will be a boost to an allover better body and smile.

           When you’re craving something crunchy

There’s just nothing quite like a bag of Doritos or some cheese puffs to satisfy that need for a crunch, right?! But what happens after that kind of snack? We feel a little sluggish and…it’s all stuck in our teeth. Ew!!

The starches in those kinds of snacks turn into sugar. And we already know that’s not very good for us.

So try just once a day to start, try trading chips for carrots, celery, or even an apple. Raw veggies and fruits help

           remove plaque from your teeth

while satisfying the desire to crunch for a few minutes. They’re like nature’s toothbrushes! It also promotes saliva flow which balances the pH in your mouth. This is how your body fights tooth decay.

           When you’re craving something sweet

The first thing that probably comes to your mind is fruit. And, yes! Fruits are great for your teeth as we just mentioned. But there are a couple of other alternatives to cookies and cake.

When you’re craving something sweet, but are willing to choose a healthier alternative, try these:

Chewing gum~ Sugarless gum can offer you the satisfaction of a sweet treat after a meal or when you just feel that “sweet tooth” going cray cray! Gum promotes saliva flow, removes plaque from previous meals, and there’s an added bonus to gum containing Xylitol. You can read more about the effects and benefits of xylitol

show that brushing your teeth within fifteen minutes of finishing your meal will greatly reduce your desire to grab something sweet for dessert. It works best with a strong toothpaste, like something with an intense mint flavor. It’s also said that because your teeth feel clean and your mouth feels fresh, it gives you a rewarding feeling beyond what you would get from a piece of cake! Now that’s a pretty “sweet” deal. (Don’t you just love a good pun, mid-blog?!)

When you’re craving a soft drink

Mmmm…that bubbly, sweet, sugary, goodness…or so our taste buds tell our brain. But soft drinks are the absolute

           worst

for our bodies and our teeth! They have way too much sugar, they’re acidic which deteriorates the enamel on our teeth, and they’re super addictive too.

Now, all that said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a soft drink at lunch with friends. But as the main beverage of your daily routine, it can be very destructive. Even diet sodas are so acidic, and the aspartame causes a lot of inflammation throughout your body.

Of course, it takes some practice and making a deliberate choice to give up a Dr. Pepper habit. I mean, they’re pretty delicious. But when you really want a better, stronger body, it’s worth it to make a trade for something healthier.

So—check this out—next time you’re at the grocery store, pick up some sparkling water and a favorite juice. Pineapple or orange juice are really great and have added health benefits. Then when you’re craving that good ol’ fizz, pour a glass of that sparkling water and add a splash of juice for sweetness. You’ll be surprised at how refreshing it is! And it leaves you feeling less sluggish than a Coke does.

Other alternatives to a soft drink could be:

Flavored water—sugar-free electrolyte powders are yummy and better for you than pre-bottled sports drinks

Lemon water—or any other natural fruit flavoring you like! You can use lime, orange, or even strawberries to give a little flavor to a plain glass of H2O.

Canned sparkling water—this is great for those of us that really enjoy that cold can feeling.

Want some healthier habits? No need to wait on a new year, Fall is a great time to start! Put these tips in motion and get a jumpstart on your goals.

Why wait for a new year when we have a new season around the corner?! Fall into good habits now with these easy tips.

Being healthier means feeling better. And we all want to be better. The trouble is that we just get stuck in our old ways and habits. Before we know it we’re on autopilot while we tell ourselves that we need to think, act, and be healthier.

The advantage we have is that good habits can replace bad habits. And all it takes is a simple shift. Like a new season! A new season is like a new week or a new year. It feels to us like a turning point. Or a clean slate. Oh, how we love a clean slate to begin something new!

by Rachel Trotta, a certified personal trainer and women’s fitness specialist, she says “Picking a goal can give meaning to a season, and lend even more momentum and excitement to a clean slate.”

With a goal in mind, you are much more likely to stick to your changes in habit. It gives them purpose instead of just sounding like a bunch of new rules or things you can’t have or do anymore. Nobody likes the sound of that!

Determine your goal and use these three easy tips to help you trade up some of your not-so-great habits for some feel-so-good ones.

Tip #1: Swap it out—Healthy Food Options

We all have that one dish that is not healthy in any way that we feel like we could eat every day and never get tired of it. For some it’s chips and salsa followed by a few tacos. For others it’s a pizza, and maybe an extra slice.

Of course, it’s okay to have those things in moderation. But when you’re looking to make choices toward eating healthier, try swapping out your favorite dish for something that tastes the same or has the same flavoring.

For example if you love a nice, hot pizza slice, covered in extra cheese with all your favorite toppings and you like to dip the crust in garlic butter…(yum!) try finding a recipe that you can make yourself, with fresh ingredients, that have all the seasonings of pizza. But cut down the cheese and bread part, and load up on more veggies.

You’ll still satisfy the craving while cutting down on a lot of the extra fat, calories, and carbs that you’re trying to avoid.

This can even be done with your desserts and sweets! When you feel the urge to reach for a treat, pop in a piece of chewing gum. Studies show that although chewing gum doesn’t really help you actually lose weight, it does help curb the cravings for something sweet. A zero sugar, low calorie substitute that fits in your pocket!

*Bonus: Chewing gum after a meal also increases your saliva flow and that’s great for preventing tooth decay. You can read more about that on

Tip #2: Make it Easy—Get exercise on your way

The thing that usually keeps us from sticking with a new exercise habit is that it doesn’t seem convenient. Then we get really great at making excuses or thinking of reasons why we can’t get that workout in today.

The gym isn’t on the way home and you have dinner plans. Your dumbbells are in the garage and you’d have to move some toys to make room to lift weights. Your gym clothes are in your gym bag in the trunk of your car. See? …I could go on.

But—if you “make it easy” to exercise, you’re much more likely to follow through. If your gym is on the way home instead of a few miles in the opposite direction, or if your exercise clothes and shoes are sitting out ready to wear…well then the decision just got a little easier, right?!

Studies have been done about how “friction” make or break your success in creating new habits in the long run. By removing the friction (the thing that convinces you to change your mind about following through on your new habit) you are literally creating success. If you

So brushing your teeth isn’t on your list of favorite things to do each day? Really?! But it feels so good!!

We get it. And it’s normal. A lot of people not only forget to brush and floss, but some have a really hard time with it. It makes them gag (which is no fun, especially first thing in the morning). They don’t like the taste of toothpaste. Or maybe it’s a little lingering trauma from childhood remembering the “BRUSH YOUR TEETH!!!!” being yelled from downstairs by your mom or dad.

But you can change your thoughts about brushing your teeth with just a few tips:

Splurge on a toothpaste that you can enjoy~

If your toothpaste tastes terrible, change it! There are SO many options to choose from. You’re much more likely to engage and enjoy your two minutes of brushing twice a day if you like the taste of your toothpaste.

            Turn on a song~

We know you have your phone somewhere nearby…so cue up Spotify or AppleMusic and get in the groove! This will also help you get your two minutes in. Most of the time we only brush for about 30 seconds unless we set a timer, and that is not long enough. Bonus tip here is if you’re humming along, you won’t gag!

You can’t physically make and sound with your vocal chords and gag at the same time.

Didn’t know you had that feature, did you?!

             Enjoy the feeling~

When it’s time to brush your teeth, pause for a moment and feel them first. Run your tongue over your teeth, catch a whiff of your breath. Now brush. (Two minutes, remember?!) Nowwww feel them…WOW! The way they feel smoother to your tongue feels great. And your breath? So much better! Don’t you love that?! When you take a moment to enjoy when somethings feels better or just plain good, you’re going to look forward to that feeling again. Much like how great you feel after a good run, or some other for of exercise.

Try taking on just one of these tips. Then let the momentum build! Before you know it, you’ll be creating new and better habits just for the fun of it!

this month how having a back-to-school routine is beneficial for you and the kids. And how to apply that routine to their appointments with the dentist. But let’s talk about us grown-ups. Because it goes a little deeper for us.

We’ve got a lot on our plates—work, relationships, bills, and the grocery list to name a few. Then…as we realize it’s been (gulp) three years since our last dental check-up, the anxiety sets in. Why do we do this to ourselves?! There’s a better way.

What is another word for a routine? The word “plan” comes to mind. It’s a plan. And having a plan means having control. We humans love to have things “under control” because there’s a certain way that it makes us feel. Control of life’s responsibilities gives us a sense of order and stability. It makes us feel

to have control. When there is no routine or plan in place, and we feel out of control regarding taking care of ourselves, our old friend Anxiety comes until we make a move.

Decisions, decisions, decisions. We make them ALL. DAY. LONG. We talk ourselves right out of any more decisions, such as which dental office to schedule an appointment with. And then where do we find ourselves? Answer: stressed out about making the decision next time we think about it. Or worse, we don’t even stop thinking about it! This is a total waste of

we could be using on something that’s way more fun.

With no routine, we wander around. You know how it goes. If you stray from the laundry routine, next thing you know you’re running to three different rooms to find a matching pair of socks. Or you’re changing your pants because the shirt you were going to wear is not where you thought it was, and in fact, it’s in the dirty clothes hamper. AUGHH!! Back-tracking all over the place is stressful.

With a dental routine in place, all of these stressful situations are resolved. You’ve eliminated the anxiety you usually feel from just picking up the phone. The plan is in place. You just carry it through!

In doing so, you’ve taken control of your health and somewhere in that mind of yours, you feel safe and secure because of it. You’ve cut out the need for a future decision, it’s already been decided! And instead of being back and forth with no direction, you have a solid plan. No more backtracking or having to go through the same extensive treatment again and again.

            Nothing is worse than the

           fear of the unknown

. And just to put it simply, the unknown can be challenged by knowing! When you avoid making your dental appointments or keeping up with a dental routine, you keep yourself out of the loop. Those regular visits inform you of the condition of your mouth. This cancels out the unknown.

So what can we do to skip that dreaded feeling? Avoid avoidance! Avoid the chance to avoid your dental care routine. That sounds simple enough. It’s sticking with it, going when you don’t really feel like it, or going even though you’re a little nervous. But it is worth it, we assure you.

The patients that avoid their check-ups because they don’t really enjoy them are usually the people that go a really long time in between visits and then find themselves with a long treatment plan. Again.

Just don’t even give yourself the opportunity to delay something as important as your dental health! It’s so much easier to make appointments for your routine dental care in advance than to wait until you’re “supposed to go back”. Because life is always happening! You will find a hundred reasons on any given day of the week (especially the weekends) to

            You’re very likely to

the things you have anxiety about. Those two go hand in hand. So if the dental office isn’t your favorite place to go, you’ll be really good at putting it off.

Why worry yourself? Putting off these important things just takes up mental space, plain and simple.

We love to use this analogy about your car:

A car needs routine maintenance: new oil and an oil filter, rotated tires, etc.

If you don’t get your oil changed at the proper mileage, you think to yourself “I have GOT to get my oil changed!”

Then some time goes by and the maintenance light comes on and reminds you that you still haven’t gotten the oil changed. Now you’re wondering somewhere in the back of your mind if something else is wrong with your car.

Then, the check engine light comes on and now you’re really freaking out! …wouldn’t it have been much easier to just get the oil changed at a regular car maintenance appointment?

           Bonus Stress Buster!

One common occurrence that we see in our dental practice is when patients get off track, they get embarrassed. They will often times look for a new dentist just out of the fear of our judgment.

            Hear this loud and clear:

WE DO NOT JUDGE YOU. Ever.

3 of our best tips for helping your child look forward to dental visits

We don’t scare kids, we love them! By following this expert advice, you can help your child have a great dental experience even if you have your own phobias and fear of the dentist.

It’s no big news that many adults have a fear of dental treatment. In fact, it’s

36% of people in the United States

according to this article from the Cleveland Clinic. The majority of those with fear are women. And…it’s usually the moms bringing the kiddos for the dental checkups.

Another fact is this: kids smell our fear. Well, ok, maybe they don’t actually smell it, but they know…they can feel it. You can put off a vibe of your own dental anxiety and the next thing you know, your kid has their own fear of the dentist. And we understand. Dentistry was quite different for a lot of us growing up.

But things have changed! Good experiences with smiling and laughing can be had by all! You can avoid passing on your nervousness and let your child have their own experience, free of worry and dread.

Here are our three best tips for helping your child look forward to dental visits.

Bring your child to your own dental visit

This is big. Kids look to us parents for cues on safe environments and situations. You can read more about that here:

           https://childmind.org/article/how-to-avoid-passing-anxiety-on-to-your-kids/

It will set your child’s mind at ease when they see you smiling and talking with the hygienist. And even more so when you greet the dentist and he’s wearing a friendly smile. Seeing these things happen will help your child understand that these people aren’t strangers. They are the doctors and healthcare professionals that help take care of us!

Having your child witness your dental exam also lets them see some things they’ve never seen before that might seem scary at first: the big chair, the different pieces of equipment like the x-ray camera, and more. They get the idea that it’s totally ok to lay back, open wide, and let someone look in your mouth. Just like the medical doctor listens to your heart, or looks at your throat or up your nose, the dentist and hygienist are just other professionals helping you feel your best.

Ask us about a “happy visit”

This is what we commonly call a visit where the child isn’t really getting all of the routine treatment, but instead just feeling things out. We let them get in the chair, touch some of the equipment like the air and water syringe or the suction. And any other activities that might seem fun to your child. It gives them the opportunity to get an idea of what’s going on here at the office from their own perspective.

We do not push anything at this “happy visit”. We might ask them to open wide so we can see in their mouth. Or show them the dental mirror and how we use it to see all of their teeth. But instead of trying to do everything we would do in a regular visit, we make a fun time out of showing them what we do. That’s it! And most of the time, the next time they come in, they are excited to see all of the cool stuff they remember being shown before.

           Talk about it!

Kids do so much better when they know what’s going on. When they feel like we’ve “let them in on” something, they understand we’re not keeping secrets from them.

You could tell them things like:

What a dental office looks like inside

The dental chairs move up and down and back, which is kind of fun, so they can see in your mouth easily

Being still while you’re getting your teeth cleaned helps them go faster!

Your teeth will be really clean and shiny

Another good way to discuss it is with a great book. There are lots of awesome children’s books about dental visits. Check out this

           website

for some suggestions or ask at your local library or book store.

           Bonus Tip: Bribe them!

Just kidding!...kind of. What we mean is strike up a deal with them for a reward or treat for good behavior and being brave. A trip to the ice cream shop on your way home is completely acceptable for being a good dental patient :)

It’s our goal at Superior Dental to raise up a generation of people that don’t feel the need to say “I hate the dentist” or to stay away from our office out of fear. The feeling of a safe environment and a happy experience is what your child deserves. And in the end, will promote a healthy relationship with their dentist well into adulthood.

Did you know? The state of Georgia requires a dental exam for kids beginning school, either with Pre-K or Kindergarten. If your child needs an exam for school, we’d be happy to help! Give us a call today to schedule.

So do yourself a favor and create a routine. It doesn’t have to be complicated, with every detail worked out. Just having the basics down pat will make life easier and everything will follow, including keeping yourself and the fam on track for dental visits.

—of course! The simple truth is that having a routine for all the basic stuff you and the kids need to accomplish every day (like brushing and flossing!) makes everything else life throws at you so much easier. When everyone knows when to put their shoes on in the morning, and then where to put them at night so they aren’t looking for them the next morning…it just…ahhhhh…makes sense. This cuts down on those completely unnecessary moments of panic and rage.

that! With a routine in place, the mental static and thoughts racing through your head will fall away. And you’ll be able to lay your head on your pillow knowing that the next school day will start with an organized and predictable morning.

—with a routine that fits your life, you can feel better about carving out some time for yourself and some downtime for the kiddos. We all need a little break. It’s really important for your mental health and promotes good moods among the masses (depending on how many kids you have, we suppose). Playtime can be part of the daily routine, making everyone happier to be enjoying the benefits of a job well done. Which is way better than one person running around yelling and screaming about undone chores while another one cries because they can’t play their video game or ride their bike.

           Tips for Making a Routine

Routines are great for kids because it gives them a sense of security. Day to day, that statement might seem a bit dramatic. But—when unusual circumstances arise, a routine promotes calm in the chaos.

recently published an article on this very subject. They have a few tips when you’re working on creating a back-to-school routine that will actually work.

Have a routine for the three most important times of the day: Morning, home from school, and evening. The beginning of all these different times of the day is a great way to re-boot. Especially when you’re getting into the back-to-school groove.

Put a written schedule where everyone can see it. We all need reminders, even us parents. Plus, you can get creative and make it something fun to look at, all while saying in your serious parent voice “This is what I expect of you.”

If you have more than one child, create a unique schedule for each of them. Not only will this accommodate each one’s personality and tendencies, but on a much more basic level, it keeps everyone from trying to brush their teeth at the same time. Which as we know, is every parent’s nightmare.

In addition to the daily home care of brushing and flossing, keeping a scheduled routine visit with Dr. Cannon will cut down on unexpected dental treatment. Making appointments in advice helps avoid procrastination when it comes to getting your check-up. Most people aren’t super excited about dental visits, so that makes putting it off easy to do. You’re much more likely to just keep an already scheduled appointment than you are to call and make one when you’re already busy.

showed that only about 4% of physical locations are optimized for local search queries on Google, Yelp, or Bing, which are the top three search engines we use online.

WHAT?! That’s a lot of places we’re not able to find without driving around town through every parking lot or strip mall.

The kind of “dentist near me” you’re really looking for could be at the bottom of the page, or at least further down than you’re going to scroll. Why? Because you’re more likely to go with whatever you see at the top of the first page that comes up from your search. And that’s understandable! We have a lot on our plates, we just want to get a dental appointment scheduled and cross that off our To-Do-List.

Here’s the trouble…the thing about the ads, of course, is that people are

           paying

to be there. They didn’t earn a spot as the very first listing, they just bought it. And this is in hopes that you just pick the first listing you see because scrolling past them would be…exhausting…?? (insert that emoji, the thinking one, or the slightly confused one, you can pick your favorite <wink>)

The sad thing is, they’re up there at the top, shining like a beacon in the night, but it’s not because they really are near you. In fact, when a business pays for the ads on a search engine, they get to customize the area so they can target certain locations! Yes! They can do that! They could be several miles past a perfectly wonderful dentist like

           2. The ads you see have nothing to do with Google reviews

Something else we all do—we read reviews! We do! They’re important to us because they give us insight based on another real person’s experience. There’s a lot of value in that. The majority of consumers rely on reviews to aid in their decision for a product or service.

Businesses that have ads may or may not have good reviews, but the listings below these ads are in the ranks because of their reviews and the integrity of their website.

So though it may seem like those top listings are “on top” based on performance or great services, doesn’t make it the right place for you based on your “dentist near me” search.

           3. You want more than just a busy dentist, you want the right dentist!

So what’s important to you? Do you want to be a patient at a dental practice that simply has a lot of patients because they spend a bunch of money on advertising? Or…do you want to be a patient at a practice that spends its efforts providing quality care? One that is growing naturally in the Google rankings by

the sort of dentist you are comfortable going to? And taking your family to?!

Because the truth is, anyone can pay for ads. But being a great dentist means investing in the patients with time, care, and education for dental health.

And where is “near” you? Is it better for you to have a dental office close to work? Or home? Or on the way to your kids’ school? This is something to consider— “on the way” to where you’re heading can be more convenient than down the road from your home.
